We make dog biscuits and we are proud to produce a product using only wholesome, natural, and quality local ingredients. We use only four ingredients when making our dog biscuits - spent grain, whole wheat flour, ground peanuts, and eggs.
Lucy's Dog Biscuits do not contain any chemicals or preservatives.
During the first step of the beer brewing process, barley and possibly wheat, rye, corn or rice is soaked in hot water. When that process is complete, the liquid is drained to move toward its bright future of becoming a beer and spent grain is simply the wet mash that remains. At this point, the spent grain is no longer needed in the beer making process. For small homebrewers, the spent grain usually ends up in the compost pile but since it is full of fiber and protein, commercial breweries often pass it on to farmers to be used as livestock feed. Spent grain can also be used in baking bread or milled into flour.
There is no alcohol in spent grain. The alcohol is produced later in the process during fermentation, after the spent grain has been removed.
We love that we are able to reuse and recycle such a nutritious by-product of the beer brewing industry!
